Aimé Leon Dore’s New Balance sneaker is now available for pre-order

Pre-orders for sneakers are becoming increasingly frequent, providing would-be buyers with a guaranteed purchase in exchange for their patience. This type of release is a nice alternative to limited-edition drops, which exclude the vast majority of sneakerheads, and it demonstrates that sneaker makers can certainly satisfy demand if given enough time.

Aimé Leon Dore’s New Balance

Aimé Leon Dore's New Balance 650R, a high-top basketball shoe first introduced in the late 1980s, is the latest sneaker to receive this more egalitarian treatment. Following the success of the sold-out 550 partnership, ALD continues its minimalist treatments for classic basketball sneakers. For a trio of ultra-clean shoes, a primarily white top and off-white midsole are combined with green, purple, or grey embellishments.

Neither the 550 nor the 650R are as well-known as other basketball sneakers from the 1980s, such as the Air Jordan 1 or the Converse Weapon, and the two styles now appear borderline orthopedic. That's really a good thing because dad-like kicks aren't going away anytime soon.

Pre-orders for Aimé Leon Dore's 650R began today, with delivery beginning in 2022. While the brand hasn't stated that the sneaker will be available in limitless numbers, such a long wait implies that everyone interested in the shoe will be able to pre-order during the window of availability.

To reserve a pair, simply establish an account on ALD's website and place your pre-order beginning at 11 a.m. ET on Friday, July 31. Along with the sneakers, apparel will be available for pre-order, removing the element of chance from the equation before the complete capsule is released in limited quantities next year.

The only drawback is that you'll be paid now for a delivery that won't arrive for at least four months, and a more typical release date guaranteed for next year may make some customers more willing to take a chance. Having alternatives, on the other hand, is a welcome development in this hype-driven market – and we can only hope that such a model becomes more frequently adopted in the future.
